EVH Wolfgang Series Electric Guitars
The EVH Wolfgang WG Standard electric guitar was created in the same style as the original Eddie Van Halen model. It was built to Eddie’s specifications, to produce the massive sounds that he did. This guitar is available at an affordable price, but it offers many of the features of the more expensive version.
The Wolfgang Special is the lower-end model of the Wolfgang series. All the EVH Wolfgang models are made by Fender under the EVH brand name. There is not a lot of differences between the Standard and the Special guitars. The Specials come with a flat top, and the Standards have a carved, arch top. They both have maple and ebony fretboards, depending on the finish. The Specials come with a plain maple neck, andn the Standards have a birds eye neck.
The basswood body features a big leaf maple top and five-ply binding. The quartersawn maple neck is a bolt-on style. It is sculpted according to Eddie’s precise specs. Graphite reinforcement provides protection against climate-induced warping.
The WG Standard was designed for comfortable playability and speed. It features an oiled finish on the back of the neck, for ease of movement. The compound radius is 12″ – 16″ on the maple fingerboard, with rolled edges. There are 22 jumbo frets and black dot inlays.
The bridge is a Floyd Rose Special Locking tremolo and two Direct Mount EVH Wolfgang humbuckers. There is a volume and tone control, and a special reverse three-way selector switch.
You will be able to play monstrous riffs, with a perfectly-balanced tone. There is a custom-wound alnico 2 EVH Wolfgang humbucker in the bridge and an alnico 3 custom-wound EVH Wolfgang humbucker in the neck. They are both controlled by the three-way toggle switch.
Basswood is a very good tonewood, used by many high-end makers for its very light weight.
Basswood bodies have a fat and well-balanced tonality. There’s a strong midrange, but also a certain softness, breathiness, superb dynamics and definition.
The bridge pickup delivers the perfect amount of punch and articulation with sweet sustain and thick chunky rhythms, while the neck pickup serves up quintessential creamy neck tones and endless sustain along with articulate cleans when the volume is rolled down.
A custom-designed EVH BI Tech HPU low friction volume knob creates even-volume tapering. It gives smooth volume swells. The EVH Bourns high friction tone knob will stay in place even if accidentally bumped. A lower kill switch mutes the guitar for popular stutter, rhythmic effects.
The neck is one of the most important aspects of any instrument, which is why this EVH Wolfgang Standard’s 2-piece bolt-on neck offers such amazing stability. Hand-rubbed satin urethane back finish for smooth, fast playability and a heel-mount truss rod spoke wheel for quicker neck adjustments when needed.
You’ll also love the playability and feel of the compound-radius fretboard on this Wolfgang Standard. The fretboard radius goes from 12″ at the nut to a comfortable and flat 16″ radius on the upper frets.
First gaining popularity in the 1980s, the Floyd Rose tremolo’s locking design keeps your guitar in tune — even if you like to perform extreme pitch pyrotechnics. You can force the whammy bar all the way down to the guitar’s body for psychotic dive-bombing. No matter how hard you yank it, you’ll maintain your tuning stability, thanks to the Floyd Rose tremolo’s locking design.
Equipped with a “dive-bomb” certified EVH-branded top-mount Floyd Rose® bridge, the locking tailpiece features fine tuners for each string and a patented EVH D-Tuna® for switching back and forth from drop-D to standard tuning in an instant.
The EVH Wolfgang WG Standard QM’s frets are Jumbo size. This is a tall fret size that is becoming increasingly popular because it makes it easier to press down the strings cleanly.
Some people prefer tall frets because it’s easier to press the strings and perform bends since there’s less friction against the fretboard. On the other hand, some people like shorter frets because they like to touch the fretboard when playing, or because they got heavy hands and tend to press too much on the string and alter the of the note pitch accidently.
Since the distance between bridge and nut is relatively long, you’ll need to give the strings more tension to get them in tune. This higher tension will allow for a couple of things. First, you can get a lower action (get the strings closer to the fretboard) because the strings won’t ‘wiggle’ too much when pluck and won’t cause fret buzz. This can allow you to use lower tunings without increasing your string gauge, and it will make it easier to press down the strings fast.
