Recording King Banjos
Recording King created traditional Pre-war style banjos. They are modeled after the original Mastertone banjos of the 1930’s. They offer players a vintage sound and handcrafted construction.
The company began as Montgomery Ward’s house brand. They produced instruments for Montgomery Ward’s original mail-order line, and follow the highest standards for instrument craftsmanship.

The Recording King Dirty 30’s Tenor Banjo brings 100 years of history into the present, road-ready vibe of the Dirty 30’s line. The tenor banjo first came to prominence in the early 1900’s, and its C-G-D-A tuning is especially well suited for folk, Celtic and Dixieland music. The tenor is a unique banjo for players looking to add a traditional vibe to their sound, and the perfect crossover instrument for mandolin, violin, viola and cello players. The Dirty 30’s Tenor Banjo has the same road-ready styling as the rest of the Dirty 30’s guitars and banjos. The narrow 19-fret neck is a pleasure to hold, and the 23″ scale delivers the perfect combination of feel and crisp clarity. The open-back rim features 16 brackets holding down a REMO Fiberskyn head for the classic period-correct tenor sound.
Dirty 30s Open Back 5 String Banjo. The Dirty Thirties Series sits at the perfect crossroads of classic sound and historic design like the original Montgomery Ward mail order instruments from the first half of the century, Dirty Thirties guitars and banjos are the ideal companion for singer-songwriters, folk stylists or traveling troubadours. The Recording King Dirty Thirties Open Back Banjo packs excellent playability and historic vibe into a retro-infused package that makes vintage style and traditional banjo sound accessible to every player.
